New Yugoslav Studies (NYS) is an interdisciplinary research group of Bay Area scholars interested in the study of Yugoslav culture and society from a comparative and transnational perspective. Founded in 2022, the group exists to facilitate critical scholarly inquiry, promote exchange of knowledge about Yugoslavia, and bring together researchers, teachers, and students from across different backgrounds.
NYS is a joint Berkeley-Stanford initiative supporting research and teaching about Yugoslavia on both campuses and in the Bay Area community at large. In its 4 years of existence, NYS has grown into a preeminent center of Yugoslav research, recognized around the world for pioneering a new field of inquiry and founding the ASEEES-affiliated New Yugoslav Studies Association.
The work of NYS has been generously supported by Berkeley’s Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ISEEES), the Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities, and Stanford’s Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies (CREEES). Our program at Berkeley is also supported by donations and individual gifts made to the New Yugoslav Studies Fund by members of the vibrant NYS community.
To date, NYS has organized over 80 events in collaboration with its partners at ISEEES, CREEES, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), Department of Art & Art History and Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures (Stanford), Center of Interdisciplinary Critical Inquiry (Berkeley), Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures (Berkeley), Townsend Center for the Humanities (Berkeley), and California Institute of Integral Studies (San Francisco).
