STAV is a group of Bay Area students and local volunteers interested in supporting democratic student movements in the Balkans by translating their work into English.
Joining the collective
STAV is open to all who wish to take a stand. One is a member of STAV when one joins our WhatsApp group and volunteers to translate or edit a text. You can ask to join the collective by emailing us at STAV@berkeley.edu.
Roles
Members can volunteer in two roles: as translators and as editors.
Translators: Student translators will have an intermediate to advanced command of BCS and an advanced to superior command of English. They will work in pairs to translate short news articles and social media posts from BCS into English.
Editors: Editors are fully bilingual and have prior experience translating from BCS into English. They are responsible for bringing pieces to publication.
Meeting in person
The STAV contingent at Berkeley will hold regular in-person meetings to resolve challenging issues of linguistic or cultural translation, to learn about the political context shaping the texts we are translating, and to receive support from peer and faculty mentors.
